Field in Focus: Insurance

The insurance industry, an economic pillar for Ohio that employs nearly 100,000, is facing an unprecedented talent gap. A 2013 workforce study by the Insurance Industry Resource Council found the industry would need to hire 26,000 new workers by 2020 due in large part to the retirement of the baby boomers.

To create a talent pipeline, the state of Ohio, insurance industry leaders and colleges and universities launched new programs – as many as nine since 2012. Learn more about the various degree and certificate programs across the state here.

Columbus State Community College recently launched a Foundation of Insurance certificate that helps students gain entry-level employment into central Ohio’s insurance industry. The college has also opened its doors to Nationwide Insurance, where representatives were recruiting for the company’s College to Career internship program.
